Deriving manner of articulation classes from phoneme co-occurrence frequencies

چکیده
This paper looks into the possibility of deriving manner of articulation classes from phoneme cooccurrence frequencies. We show that distance measures based on phoneme co-occurrence frequencies group abstract manner of articulation classes that participate in phonological processes in spite of high acoustic and articulatory variability, e. g: obstruents, liquids, approximants, etc. The test language is Brazilian Portuguese, as represented by two large phonemicized corpora. Phonetically meaningful groups of phonemes emerge from the statistical analysis of co-occurrence frequencies of types and tokens of phoneme pairs. The techniques employed are cluster analysis and multidimensional scaling. Results show consistent groupings across corpora, counts, and statistical techniques. Besides consonants and vowels, co-occurrence frequencies satisfactorily separate the major classes, as well as some smaller manner of articulation subclasses.

EEG-Based Discrimination of Imagined Speech Phonemes
This paper reports positive results for classifying imagined phonemes on the basis of EEG signals. Subjects generated in imagination five types of phonemes that differ in their primary manner of vocal articulation during overt speech production (jaw, tongue, nasal, lips and fricative). Naive Bayes and linear discriminant analysis classification methods were applied to EEG signals that were reco...
متن کاملMimological Reveries? Disconfirming the Hypothesis of Phono-Emotional Iconicity in Poetry
The present study retested previously reported empirical evidence suggesting an iconic relation between sound and emotional meaning in poetry. To this end, we analyzed the frequency of certain phoneme classes in 48 German poems and correlated them with ratings for emotional classification. Our analyses provide evidence for a link between the emotional classification of poems (joyful vs. sad) an...
متن کاملPlaces and Manner of Articulation of Bangla Consonants: A EPG Based Study
Bangla phoneme inventory consists of 32 consonants out of those 16 are stop or plosive and 4 are affricate. This paper presents the detailed investigation of place and manner of articulation of Bengali phonemes. The place of articulation study of consonants is based on Electropalatography (EPG) system and the manner of articulation study is based on acoustic study of large number of well-spoken...
متن کاملDeriving a Priori Co-occurrence Probability Estimates for Object Recognition from Social Networks and Text Processing
Certain components in images can be recognized with high accuracy, for example, backgrounds such as leaves, grass, snow, sky, water. These components provide the human eye with context for identifying items in the foreground. Likewise for the machine, the identification of background should help in the recognition of foreground objects. But, in this case, the computer needs explicit lists of ob...
متن کاملIdentification of Phonemes: Differences between Phoneme Classes and the Effect of Class Size
This study reports general and language-specific patterns in phoneme identification. In a series of phoneme monitoring experiments, Castilian Spanish, Catalan, Dutch, English, and Polish listeners identified vowel, fricative, and stop consonant targets that are phonemic in all these languages, embedded in nonsense words. Fricatives were generally identified more slowly than vowels, while the sp...
